St. Valentine is best remembered as a priest who carried out secret marriage ceremonies for young couples who wished to be married during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Claudius was looking to increase his army with young recruits during that period and believed that marriage would distract young soldiers from their duties. When Claudius became aware that Valentine was conducting secret marriage ceremonies, he sent him to prison and ultimately had him executed.
