The derby hat, or bowler hat, was first produced in 1849 by Lock & Co., hatters for Edward Coke, a British soldier and politician. Coke’s request for the design was something that was close-fitting with a low crown. He wanted a hat that would protect the heads of his gamekeepers from low-hanging branches while riding horseback.
