A Toast to Halloween 2017
Here at Drink Kings, his royal majesty has put together a list of nine spooky drinks that are sure to frighten all of the kingdom. Enjoy and Happy Halloween!
1. Headless Horseman
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was written by Washington Irving as part of a collection of short stories, published in 1820. The story takes place during the American Revolution. Part of the story surrounds the legend of the Headless Horseman, a Hessian soldier (German soldier contracted by the British government), who was decapitated by a cannonball and was said to be seen riding around the battlefield, searching for his head. The drink is a combination of vodka, Angostura bitters and ginger ale.
2. Satan’s Whiskers
In Hebrew, the original meaning for the term satan was “to obstruct, oppose”. Let nothing oppose you from trying this drink. It’s a combination of gin, dry vermouth, sweet vermouth, orange juice and Grand Marnier.
3. Screaming Banana Banshee
According to Irish/Gaelic folklore, the banshee is a female spirit that screams or sings and can be an omen of death. This cocktail is a blend of vodka, banana liqueur, white crème de cacao and heavy cream.
4. Green Devil
“Green Devil” was the common nickname used by Allied forces to describe German paratroopers during World War II. This little devil combines gin, green crème de menthe, lime juice and club soda.
5. El Diablo
El Diablo, or the Devil, is a supernatural entity that is found across many religions and is believed to be the personification of evil. God and the Devil are often said to be in a constant battle over human souls. The drink is a mix of tequila, crème de cassis, lime juice and ginger ale.
6. Green Lantern
The Green Lantern is a comic book superhero, created in 1940, that fights evil with a special ring that gives the Lantern superpowers. The character was created by Martin Nodell, who came up with the idea for the superhero while watching a railroad employee waiving a lantern on the tracks that turned from red to green. The drink is a combination of melon liqueur, orange juice and lemon-lime soda.
7. Blood Clot
Warfarin (also known under the brand names Coumadin, Jantoven, Marevan, Uniwarfin) is a common medication used to prevent blood clots. It is also used as a rodenticide or rat poison in controlling rodents in residential, industrial and agricultural areas. This drink is a mix of Southern Comfort, lemon-lime soda and grenadine.
8. Dark ‘N’ Stormy
Kampala, Uganda is known as the stormiest place on earth, averaging nearly 250 thunderstorms per year. This classic drink is a combination of dark rum, ginger beer and lime juice.
9. Voodoo
One week after Jimi Hendrix died in September 1970, his song Voodoo Child (Slight Return) was released in the UK and was his only #1 single on the British music charts. The Voodoo is a blend of milk, butterscotch schnapps, coconut rum, and coffee liqueur.
