The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was written by Washington Irving as part of a collection of short stories, published in 1820. The story takes place during the American Revolution. Part of the story surrounds the legend of the Headless Horseman, a Hessian soldier (German soldier contracted by the British government), who was decapitated by a cannonball and was said to be seen riding around the battlefield, searching for his head.
